Wind, Cranes, and the Need to Adapt
Building in wide, open terrain means wind is a constant presence, and our approach to innovation must be just as dynamic. At the Foundry Partners site, wind is not merely an inconvenience, it is one of the most serious hazards. Uncontrolled wind can destabilize equipment, create unpredictable load movement, and place both personnel and structures at significant risk.
Cranes are essential to constructing the Lilly Medicine Foundry, with multiple types in operation every day. Due to their height, reach, and exposed surface area, cranes are particularly vulnerable to wind forces. As a result, each crane follows strict wind-speed protocols when conditions reach 20 mph or higher, ensuring operations adjust before safety is compromised. Because various crane types are in use, each requires a specific response.
These measures may include retracting a boom, securing equipment to a BIM block, or placing tower cranes into free-spin mode to safely manage wind loads.
Since wind conditions can change rapidly, continuous monitoring is critical. In alignment with Foundry Partners’ commitment to being “uncommon,” an on-site weather station equipped with an anemometer has been installed to track wind speed in real time. Alerts are sent directly to key safety team members, and immediate, site-wide text notifications are issued when thresholds are reached. Once a stop-work message is sent and operations are halted, the anemometer is closely monitored until wind speeds consistently fall below 20-mph, allowing an all-clear message to be communicated site-wide.
Most importantly, each crane is equipped with its own wind alert monitor, ensuring operators always have real-time awareness. By recognizing the dangers of wind and adapting in real time, Foundry Partners prioritizes safety while keeping progress moving forward.
